Writing is not a performance art. But given the power and connectivity of modern writing implements, there's no reason it can't be. Here's a time-lapse view of essayist Paul Graham composing a recent piece.
The helter-skelter "Time Slider" movie is a reminder of how tortured and chaotic the practice of writing can be, even for a brief work of nonfiction. That can be hard to appreciate that when you're lining up the words yourself.
The movie is also consolation to anyone who's been struggling to bang out some piece of text lately: Yes, composition is laborious and awkward for others, too.
